My project is based on the theme of ‘Luxe’ with a decadent, boudoir twist. I have looked at different types of corsets; antique jewellery and ballet shoes, which helped me, produce most of my drawings. The corset, which is used in a variety of different ways in my drawings, was bought as a plain black boned corset and distressed with bleach and parts cut out of the corset. I added different types of fastenings, safety pins and dressmakers pins, which gave more of an edgy look to the corset. I also used brooches and different types of jewellery in my drawings; representing the types of jewellery my muse would be wearing and added the ballet shoes to highlight her upper class lifestyle.

My muse is an exquisite young woman living in a manor with her parents, desperate to break free of their reign and be able to express her true self to the world. Her real life is shrouded in mystery, full of parties, and other social events as she remains at the top of everyone’s guest list. Always camouflaged in the most eccentric clothes and jewellery, she is desired by almost everyone.

I have chosen to use colours such as corals, greys, navy and antiques creams, while adding some burnished coppers and gold to portray the ‘decayed luxury’ effect in my work. In my drawings I used different media to exaggerate the piecing together of the corsets, using different weights of papers on a large scale, and masking tape to show the joins. Using ink and bleach was also used frequently in my drawings to give a distressed look to my backgrounds. I really enjoyed working in a loose way with the fine liners and markers as it gave the drawings a distorted look. I wanted to continue working in a large scale and again piecing together fabrics in different weights and combining different drawings in my samples, using different fastenings also.

I really enjoy using textiles which is directed towards a fashion way and I feel studying at MMU could provide a very open-mined way of working as I really love using different materials which are not normally associated with textiles and experimenting with different ideas.
